Cut Comb Honey Harvest

Last September I harvested some honeycomb from one of my Warre hives.  In Spring of 2008 I had hived a huge swarm, and over the summer they built up a big hive with lots of good looking honey comb.  I decided I would harvest a box of cut comb honey from this hive.

Hive Robbers

Hive robbers are bad for your beehive. I am not talking about the two legged kind.  I am referring to honeybees which will rob other beehives.  Not too long ago I received the following sad message from Fred:

We’re pretty much beginners, our third try at keeping bees.  We have learned from our mistakes, but our latest hive has just succumbed to raiders after being so promising. We had a healthy hive as far as we could tell and had added two honey supers and were looking forward to harvesting one after opening the top one and finding it almost completely full.

Hot Weather + Nectar Flow = Busy Bees

Mid 90’s in the shade

Talk about hot!  It has been hot here in this last week,  The weather is cooler now…but last week we had several days of mid 90’s F in the shade. Regardless of how we humans feel, the bees seem to cope with the heat rather well.  My bees have been very busy gathering the last of the blackberry nectar flow and carrying it home to ripen into honey.   They are also gathering another liquid in large quantities…water.
